Intel Core 2 Duo processors are dual-core x86-64 microprocessors manufactured by Intel Corporation, representing a major architectural advancement in processor design.
Used in iMac models from 2006-2009, these processors marked a significant leap forward from the previous single-core designs, introducing the Core microarchitecture that dramatically improved performance and power efficiency.
The iMac featured various Core 2 Duo models built on 65nm and 45nm process technologies, with clock speeds ranging from 1.83GHz to 3.06GHz. Key features included dual execution cores sharing a unified L2 cache (up to 6MB), Intel’s Wide Dynamic Execution for parallel instruction processing, Smart Cache technology, Enhanced SpeedStep for power management, Execute Disable Bit for security, and SSE3/SSSE3 instruction sets for multimedia acceleration.
These processors enabled smooth multitasking, improved creative application performance, and represented the midpoint in Apple’s transition from PowerPC to Intel architecture, establishing iMac as a competitive platform for both consumer and professional users.
