PowerPC G5 processors are high-performance 64-bit RISC microprocessors designed by IBM and manufactured by Apple Inc. Used in iMac G5 models from 2004-2006, these processors represented the pinnacle of Apple’s PowerPC architecture before the transition to Intel.
Built on 90nm and 130nm process technologies, the PowerPC 970 (G5) featured a superscalar architecture with clock speeds ranging from 1.6GHz to 2.1GHz in iMac configurations.
Key features included 64-bit computing capabilities, AltiVec velocity engine for enhanced multimedia processing, dual-issue floating-point unit, out-of-order execution, up to 1MB L2 cache, and a high-bandwidth frontside bus. These powerful processors enabled professional creative workflows, advanced scientific computing, and represented Apple’s most ambitious PowerPC implementation.
The G5 iMac was notable for delivering desktop-class performance in an all-in-one design, though thermal challenges and power consumption ultimately contributed to Apple’s decision to transition the entire Mac lineup to Intel architecture by 2006.
